2027 intentions jar: write them at midnight, read them a year later

Resolutions get heavy by February because they live in your head. An intentions jar moves them onto paper. Write each one on a slip on New Year’s Eve, drop it in and let the jar do the remembering. Monthly check-in cards keep the year honest, and a sealed letter waits for 1 January 2028.

How to write an intention that fits on a slip

Short, kind and doable on a Tuesday. Start with a verb: walk, call, cook, finish, say no. Write one intention per slip so you can move it between piles later. Three to seven slips per person is plenty. A jar stuffed with twenty promises turns back into a list.

Add a reason in a few words. “Call Gran on Sundays, because she lights up” is easier to keep than “Call Gran.” The reason is what you will read in July when the habit is wobbling.

Keep, try and let go

Sort your slips into three piles as you write them. The piles make the jar easy to read in a year, and they stop every intention from sounding like homework.

  • Keep

Habits you already have and want to protect.

    • Sunday walk
    • Cook one real meal a week
    • Read before bed
  • Try

Small experiments with an end date.

    • One unfamiliar recipe a month
    • A class in spring
    • Ten minutes of stretching
  • Let go

Things you are ready to put down.

    • Phone in bed
    • Saying yes too fast
    • Comparing my pace

Twelve monthly check-in cards

Print the set once. On the first weekend of each month pull that month’s card, answer it in a sentence, fold it and drop it in the jar. In December the twelve cards read like a diary of the year.

  • JanuaryThe intention I most want to keep
  • FebruaryOne tiny step I took this month
  • MarchSomething I am letting go of
  • AprilA habit that is starting to feel easy
  • MayWho I want to spend more time with
  • JuneHalfway: what is working?
  • JulyOne thing to adjust for the second half
  • AugustA small joy worth protecting
  • SeptemberA promise to myself I kept
  • OctoberSomething I am braver about than in January
  • NovemberWhat I want to finish before the year ends
  • DecemberWhat I would tell January me

Choose the jar and the moment

A wide-mouthed glass jar is ideal, with the lid saved for midnight. Keep a stack of slips and a pencil beside it from the first day of December so the writing is part of the evening and not a chore squeezed in before the countdown. Put the jar where you will see it every day, on a shelf at eye level and not in a drawer.

  • On your own: write at the desk, light a candle, drop each slip in as you finish it.
  • Couples: each choose your own ink colour and write separate slips. Add one slip together for the year ahead.
  • Families: large slips for the children, a rule that nobody reads another person’s slips and a toast at midnight.
  • Friends: print a set each, write at the same time on a call and compare the first line afterwards.

Sizes, colour and paper

Small slips (60 × 36 mm) suit a jam jar and short intentions. Medium (90 × 50 mm) is the all-rounder. Large (95 × 85 mm) has room for a reason and a first step. Colour mode gives each month its own ink, ink-saver mode prints outlines only, and the tool fits A4 or US Letter with dashed lines to cut along.

The sealed year-end letter

Print the reading sheet as well. It holds six prompts for New Year’s Eve, such as three words for the year and the intention that makes you a little nervous. Cut the seal band from the top, fold the sheet in thirds with the writing inside, tape the band over the edge and lay it on the slips. It stays closed for twelve months.

How to open your jar on 1 January

Plan a quiet hour with a hot drink. You are meeting the person who wrote these slips a year ago, so read slowly and be gentle with them. Here is the order that works.

  1. 1
    11:50 pm

    Set the table

Put the jar, the sealed letter and a pen on a clear table. Add a hot drink, a lamp and three envelopes labelled kept, changed and let go. Leave the slips where they are.

  2. 2
    Midnight

    Break the seal

Read the year-end letter before anything else. Read it aloud if you are with people and quietly if you are on your own. Notice what made you smile.

  3. 3
    12:10 am

    Tip it out and sort

Pour out the intention slips and sort them into the three envelopes. Be honest and light. Changed counts as a result, and so does let go.

  4. 4
    Month by month

    Read the check-in cards

Take the twelve cards in month order. They tell the story of how each intention moved, or did not, and they are usually the most surprising part.

  5. 5
    After the last card

    Name the wins

Write down the intention you are proudest of, the step that mattered most and one thing you would do differently. Say thank you to anyone who helped.

  6. 6
    1 January, morning

    Carry forward

Rewrite the slips you want to keep on fresh paper for the coming year. The rest go in an envelope marked with the year. Wash the jar and drop the first slip in.

A half-time peek

On 1 July, take out the monthly cards only and read the first six. Leave the intention slips and the sealed letter where they are.

Quick answers

How many intentions should go in the jar?

Three to seven per person is a good range. Fewer, clearer slips are easier to keep and easier to read back.

Can a couple or a family share one jar?

Yes. Give everyone their own ink colour or pen, write separate slips and read them together at midnight a year later.

Do I have to wait a whole year to open it?

Not for the monthly cards. On 1 July read the first six cards as a half-time check and leave the intention slips sealed until 1 January.

What if an intention changes?

Rewrite the slip, put the old one in the changed envelope and keep going. Changing your mind is part of the story.

Can I print without colour?

Yes. Ink-saver mode prints outlines only, with no coloured fills.

Does it work on A4 and US Letter?

Both. Choose the paper in the slips tool and the grid and reading sheet follow it.
