Reading challenge jar 2027: twelve categories, one shelf, a year of books

Most reading challenges are a number: fifty books, a hundred books, and a guilty feeling by April. A reading challenge jar swaps the number for a shelf. Each jar is a kind of book you want to try, and you fill it as you read. By December you can see at a glance what you explored and what you skipped.

How a reading jar works

Pick twelve categories for the year, one per jar. Each time you finish a book in a category, tap the jar up a level. Five taps and the jar is full. That gives you up to sixty books, but nobody has to hit that. A year with four full jars and eight half ones is a good reading year, and the shelf shows it.

The difference from a normal tracker is that levels reward variety. A jar for poetry that is one-fifth full tells you something about your year, and a nudge to pick up a slim collection in a quiet week.

Twelve categories to start with

The preset in the maker uses these, and you can swap any for your own:

  • Cosy mystery: low-stakes puzzles with tea and a cat.
  • Fantasy doorstop: the thick one that has been on your shelf for years.
  • Memoir: someone else's life, told well.
  • Poetry: a collection or an anthology, read slowly.
  • Short stories: perfect for a train ride or a lunch break.
  • Classic I skipped: the one everyone else read at school.
  • Audiobook: for walks, washing up and long drives.
  • Graphic novel: pictures count.
  • Non-fiction: history, science, nature, food, anything curious.
  • Book club pick: whatever the group chose, even if you would not have.
  • Re-read a favourite: returning to an old friend.
  • Translated novel: a voice from another language.

Make the scale mean something

Decide before January what a full jar is. For example, five books in a category, or three if the category is heavy. Write it down so the shelf stays honest all year.

Setting up your 2027 shelf

Open the reading preset in the maker, put your name on the shelf and swap any label you do not fancy. Keep labels short enough to fit under a jar. Then bookmark the link or copy it, because the link reopens your exact shelf with your levels, so you can update it after each finished book.

Prefer paper? Print the blank jar sheet, write your categories on it and keep it inside the cover of your current book. Colour a level when you close the last page.

Ways to make it social

  • Shelf swap: in July, post your shelf and ask a friend to post theirs. Compare the jars you share and trade a book from your fullest one.
  • Group challenge: a book club agrees on the same twelve jars. Each member fills their own, and the meeting opens with the fullest jar of the month.
  • Family shelf: younger readers get their own preset with picture books, jokes, animals and adventure, filled by sticker.
  • Gift idea: fill a blank shelf with categories chosen for a friend and hand it over with a book for the first jar.

Keeping the habit light

Check your shelf at the end of each month, not each day. Look for the emptiest jar and let it choose your next read. If a category stops being fun, replace it. A challenge that feels like homework will be abandoned by March, and a shelf you enjoy opening will still be there in December. When you are ready for another seasonal shelf, there is a November gratitude jar and an advent activity jar in the maker too.

Quick answers

How many books is a full jar?

You choose. Five books in a category is a natural level, but three works for long reads. Set the rule in January and keep it.

Can I change categories mid-year?

Yes. Remove a jar, add your own label and carry on. The shelf is meant to follow what you enjoy.

Does it work with audiobooks and graphic novels?

Absolutely. Both have their own jars in the preset, and anything you finish counts.

How do I keep my progress?

Copy the link to your shelf. It reopens with every level exactly as you left it, so update it after each book.

Your first reading jar is one tap away.
